Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a MUN?
Model United Nations, or MUN, is an activity where students role-play as delegates to the United Nations, simulating its committees and procedures. Participants debate global issues, representing countries' viewpoints to find solutions, develop diplomacy skills, and learn about international relations and the UN.
2. How is an MUN going to help?
MUN helps you grow by boosting your confidence in speaking, improving your research skills, and teaching you how to work with others to solve global problems. It also helps you understand different cultures and how countries work together, preparing you for college and future jobs.
3. How should you prepare for your first MUN conference?
Thorough research is essential. You should research your assigned country's foreign policy, the topic's background, and your committee's functions. You'll likely also prepare a position paper outlining your country's stance and an opening speech to kick off the debate.
4. What happens during debate?
During debate, delegates deliver speeches, introduce motions for various actions, engage in both formal moderated caucuses and informal unmoderated caucuses (for negotiations), and vote on amendments and draft resolutions.
5. What websites can I use for my research?
For MUN research, rely on official sources like the United Nations website and government foreign ministry sites. Reputable news outlets like BBC and Reuters provide current information. Think tanks like the Council on Foreign Relations and academic databases like JSTOR also offer valuable insights. Always verify information and check for bias.
6. What are MUN awards?
Awards are typically given for outstanding performance in the conference. Common awards include:
- Best Delegate: The top performer in the committee.
- Outstanding Delegate: The top performer in the conference.
- Highest Commendation: Second best.
- Special Mention: Recognizes notable contributions but not necessarily at the top.
7. Who do I contact in case of any issues during the MUN?
The organizing team will have OC members for each committee. You can also reach out to the Secretariat or the Director General for any help.
8. Will internet access be available at the venue?
Basic internet access will be provided, but delegates are advised to complete most of their research in advance and not rely entirely on venue connectivity during sessions as some chairs and vice-chairs for some committees will not allow access to the internet.
9. What is the dress code for the MUN?
Day 1 – Traditional attire. Day 2 – Formal Western Attire. The dress code is to be followed by all the delegates mandatorily.
10. Is prior MUN experience required to participate?
No, AWSMUN VJA welcomes both first-timers and experienced delegates. All necessary procedures and guidance will be provided by the Executive Board (EB), ensuring a smooth experience for everyone.
11. What are the Rules of Procedure (ROP) and why are they important?
The Rules of Procedure (ROP) are a set of formal guidelines that govern how a committee operates during a Model United Nations conference. They define how delegates raise motions, deliver speeches, vote on resolutions, and engage in debate. Understanding the ROP is essential, as it ensures smooth proceedings, fairness, and order during committee sessions. If you're ever unsure, you can raise a Point of Parliamentary Inquiry to clarify any rule.
12. What should I do if I don’t know how to start my research?
Begin by thoroughly reviewing the Background Guide provided by the Executive Board. Afterwards, delve into your country's past policies, actions, and positions related to the agenda. Refer to reliable sources such as UN databases, government websites, and academic journals. For further assistance, you are always encouraged to reach out to the secretariat.
13. Can I collaborate with other delegates before the conference?
Yes, pre-conference collaboration and discussions are highly encouraged as they foster understanding and diplomatic thinking. A group will be created including all the delegates in your committee for discussion of topics for a moderated caucus, etc.
14. What do I do if I don't know what to say during debate?
It’s completely normal to feel stuck or unsure during committee sessions. If you're struggling to contribute, start by listening actively to other delegates and noting down key points. You can also refer back to your Position Paper, raise a Moderated Caucus on a subtopic you're confident about, or ask for clarification through Points.
15. What should I bring on the day of the MUN?
Delegates are expected to bring a printed copy of their Position Paper and optionally a digital device. Most importantly, arrive with confidence, respect, and a willingness to engage in diplomacy.
